Combining contemporary young adult novels with student creativity to make entertaining and educational games for the purpose of increasing reading at WMS is the goal of this student-oriented project. Eighth grade students in Honors English each choose one of the SC Junior Book Award nominees for 2006-2007 and use their creativity to make a game for use in the upcoming school year. These 78 students can work in teams to provide at least one game for every book. The game board and the object of the game must reflect some aspect of the story, and the accompanying questions about the book focus on reinforcing reading comprehension and literary analysis skills. Game makers will experience all the steps involved in the process of making a concept a reality: brainstorming, drafting, prewriting, revising, editing, conducting trial runs, advertising, etc. These books and games will be available to all Language Arts classes at WMS, grades 6-8, with additional books being available in the media center. Most of our Language Arts teachers encourage students to participate in this reading program, and adding the games offers an incentive for 500+ students to gain further practice in comprehension and analysis. The approximate education value is priceless when one considers the student creativity that is tapped, the reading opportunities that will be given, and the fun students can experience as they reinforce basic reading comprehension and literary analysis skills. The games will be a gift of service from the graduating eight graders to the students who follow them.
