Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth grade teacher at a title I school in Inwood/Washington Heights. My current class roster is 29 children, with a cap of 32. Ninety-three percent of the students at my school receive free lunch. During the past two years, our school has adopted the Teachers' College Workshop model for our literacy block. This model mandates that the children in the class read leveled books both in school and at home every day. The students borrow books from the classroom library and transport them back and forth in large gallon size baggies. Needless to say the baggies are getting quite sad looking and I have found a better transport method for the books. Some genius in the field of education, probably a teacher who was sick of the baggies, has invented clear thick plastic book pouches that can hold up to ten books without being destroyed. This is the resource I am requesting today. My students are getting tired of their baggies as they are in quite a state of disrepair so they are carrying the books around loose. Loose books leads to books that either disappear or get ruined. My students and I would greatly appreciate a class set of book pouches to protect our precious books. Another wonderful thing about these book pouches is that they can be reused year after year, so, assuming that they last about five years, over one hundred and fifty children will benefit from this proposal. I am requesting forty pouches all together: thirty to be used immediately and ten as replacements. They are kids, after all! Thank you.
