Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an IGS (Intensive Global Support) Special Education room with Freshman to Seniors, and students that have graduated that can come back until they are 22 years of age. The classroom that I work in consists of 8 students. These students have intellectual disabilities and their cognitive levels range from K-3rd grade, and they are very interested and excited to learn about different life skills to help them after they graduate.
We work on life, social and job skills throughout the year with our students.
My Project
Independent reading is one of the most important activities that students can engage in to make the world around them more meaningful.
By reading, students learn the vocabulary they need to effectively communicate their thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams to others, and to engage actively in their communities.
Learning should be fun! We are studiously searching for "educational" toys in our great eagerness to teach our children, games with built-in lessons, books with a "message." Such "tools" are often less engaging and stimulating than the natural curiosity and playfulness of the student. Play is educational in its very existence and it's supposed to be fun. When the fun goes out of play, the learning usually does the same.
Through games, students can learn a variety of important skills. There are countless skills that students can develop through game playing such as critical thinking skills, creativity, teamwork and good sportsmanship.
By encouraging reading, it helps my students build valuable background knowledge. This really increases their overall comprehension.
