My students need a sturdy bookcase to store books from our classroom library, as well as, their personal book boxes, and a storage shelf for their reading binders.
I teach at a Title I school in North Carolina where one hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My amazing students come from a variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. Our classroom is a beautiful mixture of different ethnic groups, personalities, and learning styles. A large portion of my students are socioeconomically disadvantaged living in poverty-stricken homes and facing a variety of hardships associated with poverty.
My students are eager to learn, but are often in need of an abundance of additional support, encouragement, and resources.
I am aware of the unfortunate challenges so many of my students are facing and battling outside of the classroom. Therefore, I feel it is prominent for me, as their teacher, to ensure our classroom is a safe, inspiring, and uplifting place where they can learn, make mistakes, and grow as individuals.
My Project
Book boxes - CHECK! Reading binders - CHECK! Bookshelves - NEEDED! My students have personal book boxes where they keep the reading materials that they are currently reading, as well as reading binders where they record notes and complete activities about the materials we are reading together as a class. Due to limited desk space, students are not able to store the binders in their desks, and it just doesn't feel right, as a lifelong reader and long-time book lover, to store our book boxes on the floor of our classroom.
I want to teach my students to love, respect, and appreciate literature and reading, and I feel as though that starts with providing them with a sturdy, clean, organized space to store our reading materials, including our classroom novels, book boxes and reading binders.
If students do not think and see that I respect our reading materials, how can I expect my students to respect our classroom reading materials? Our reading binders and book boxes are materials that we use on a daily basis in my classroom, so providing students with an easily accessible storage shelf for these materials is so important.
These bookshelves will be functional, accessible, and dependable classroom storage units that will not only be used on a daily basis, but will also be used for years to come! Please help me provide my students with a special space for our beloved books, book boxes, and reading binders!
