My students come from a small, rural farming community. We are a Title I school where everybody knows everybody else. Most kids have attended this school since kindergarten, and that goes for much of the staff, too! It's a place people move to and never leave. It's a place where the students and the community take great pride in attending. Our students have achieved great success, both on and off the court, despite some financial hardships. In fact, our school is the oldest in the district, clocking in at over 100 years. Throughout those years, several state championships in multiple sports have occurred, as well as several high-ranking band and chorus performances.
With the history and level of pride our students and community has, our lack of resources are often overlooked.
This may be due in part to the wonderful and hard-working teachers, but it is also due in part to that's just the way it's always been.
My Project
Living in a rural, American community, many cultures outside of their own culture is unknown. This book , Aru Shah and the End of Time, is about the Indian culture, not Native American, but those from India. It chronicles Hindu mythology, one often overlooked in education. By teaching this book, students will become aware of the hero's journey plot which is prevalent in many stories and movies and thus will help them in future literary analysis.
This book will expose students to a whole new world, and for those who cannot afford their own copy, will give them the chance to take this world home and keep it.
Not only that, but it will give them the chance to "be like everyone else" and prevent them from having to borrow one or go through the trouble of borrowing one and having to ask which can be very difficult for middle school students. Perhaps after reading this book, they will learn from the main character and find the courage to step out of their comfort zone and be able to seek help when needed.
