Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kindergarten is the best place to grow and learn! With new, rigorous standards, it's challenging to balance academics with appropriate and motivating activities. My students are digital natives; technology surrounds them. Electronic Boogie Boards will give them a head start in math, science, and literacy learning.
My kindergarten classroom is made up of 25 diverse and very energetic 5 and 6-year-olds.
Our Title I school is located in southern Arizona. We are a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) school. At our school, 99% of the students receive free lunch. More than half of my students are refugees from Africa, Asia, Mexico, and the Middle East. All come from low-income households and live in neighborhood apartments or trailer parks. Seven different languages are spoken in our classroom. For many of my students, kindergarten is the first place that they are exposed to daily oral language in English. Their parents do not have the money to provide them with technology such as Boogie Boards, iPads, computers, and more. The reality is that these technological devices do not exist in their homes.
My Project
We go through a lot of paper and dry erase markers because we love writing, doing math problems and practicing sight words. Just think of all the trees and ink we will save by switching over to Boogie Boards! They will be easy to grab rather than finding the dry erase markers, whiteboards, and erasers, since it is all contained in one device.
My students will use these Boogie Boards in whole and small group work, with partners, and individually in writing, reading and math.
They will love that they look like tablets, get to use a stylus, and with a push of a button magically erase what they have written.
