"You have to be the masters of your own financial future" -Suze Orman. Elementary students need to learn the value of money at an early age.
My students have mild to severe learning disabilities, and learn through a variety of different modalities.
Some are tactile, some are visual, and others are kinesthic learners. Most need a hands on approach to improve their learning. The Boogie Boards and play money will address their different needs. My students are eager to learn new things and need constant practice and reinforcement. They come from different ethnic backgrounds. Some live in the neighborhood, while others travel from various areas. My students face academic challenges daily. They attend a high poverty school which does not receive any extra funding for resources and supplies needed.
My Project
Financial education is necessary in our schools. Children have a difficult time conceptualizing the value of money. Gathering and understanding important information found in stock listings is an important life skill. The play money and Boogie Boards will be used to create a stock market center in our classroom. My students will be given stock market charts and graphs to interpret. They will also be given word problems in which they are told how much they need to invest and over a given time figure out how much they have gained or lost. They will be given play money to buy and sell stocks. The concepts that they will learn include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will learn how to manage their money. The Boogie Boards will be used to calculate their transactions. The bins and sleeves will keep their materials organized. The money will give my students a hands on approach to make it easier to conceptualize how much money they have to work with.
My students will benefit greatly from these materials that will be used to educate them about financial literacy.
They will have a multi sensory approach that will address their needs. If a student feels successful they will want to learn. They will not only have challenging activities but will have an opportunity to increase their math skills while learning the value of money.
