I have a class of 22 students who are nearly all underprivileged. Our school has a very high percentage of students who are living at or below the poverty level. Many of our students are on food stamps or other welfare programs. My class is full of hard working students who care a lot about each other and their community.
Even though they themselves might be struggling, my students have decided to open and run a food pantry here at school to help support other students who don't have enough to eat at home.
My students manage the food pantry and help to distribute food to approximately 22 students each Friday. After our first distribution I stated that I wished we could have helped more kids. One of my fifth graders came up to me and said, "We made a difference!" It is amazing to me that these 10- and 11-year-old kids can see how much of a difference they can make in the lives of others. I hope they continue to be such giving people!
My Project
We began a new math curriculum this year that requires each student to have a dry erase marker and marker board every day for math. While the marker boards make math practice easier, they have a few flaws. The markers don't last that long with daily use and replacing them often can become expensive. They are also messy, sending students and teachers home each day with marker all over their hands.
Boogie Boards are digital writing tablets that will reduce waste and classroom messes while engaging students in fun math practice utilizing technology.
Students will use the Boogie Boards everyday during math for both math fluency practice and learning new skills. The boards erase with the push of a button making clean up a snap. The fine point stylus will also make math easier and neater.
