Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm lucky to work with a wonderful community filled with dreams. Most of my students come from low income families, and are 1st to 2nd generation Americans. Since I am an art teacher, some of my students are taking an art class for the very first time in their lives. I love exposing them to new ideas and materials so that they can grow creatively. They become very attached to their art projects and usually can't wait to take them home to their families. This year I am working as a club advisor for a health and fitness roller skate club.
Through art making, exposing them to roller skating culture, and teaching them about acceptance my students express themselves in new and creative ways.
Sometimes they don't have much of a voice in their lives, but working with them allows me to help them to develop a unique view and opinion of the world.
My Project
The art supplies for this club is to help promote community and the advancement of young people is sports and health through roller skating. They will be making T-Shirts and Buttons that promote roller skating and body positivity. By age 14, girls drop out of sport activities at twice the rate of boys. Participation in sports can provide many positive benefits to young woman and their communities, including improved body image, self-confidence, leadership skills, and more.
This group of students want's to educate their school that health and fitness can be achieved at any size or gender.
They will work hard to promote their ideals through the creation of wearable art.
