My students need 41 copies of the novel, Bodega Dreams, so that each one can take one home and continue reading outside of the classroom.
Do you remember that feeling you get when you read a book that is so good, that you can't put it down? We think we have that kind of book for our students, but without enough copies, everyone will HAVE to put it down once the period ends.
I co-teach a twelfth grade English class in a high-poverty, urban neighborhood in New York.
We have Special Education and English Language Learner populations that are much larger than the citywide average. We are preparing our students for life after graduation; many of our seniors aspire to enter college, and two things we believe are crucial to their success are being able to handle an increased workload and being able to work outside of the classroom.
In order to better prepare our students for college life, I am requesting books, books, and more books! We have enough copies for a class set, but it will be nearly impossible to read the entire book if we do not have copies to assign to each student for reading outside of the classroom. These additional books will give students the freedom to pick and choose where they will complete the readings - in transit, at home, at a library, etc. They will develop more independence and responsibility as they practice skills crucial to college life, possibly learning more about how and where they study best. We, as their teachers will, in turn, be able to assign deeper, more meaningful projects that will allow our kids to tap into their potential.
My co-teacher and I have literally left no stone unturned in our search for copies.
In the end, we have come up short by 40 copies, with no hope of additional school funding for more. Your donation will do more than put a book in every one of our kids' hands: it will put one in all of their backpacks. The additional time they get with the book might be just what they need to realize how "good" finding a good book can be...and it might just be the first steps in transitioning to college life.
