This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are making a Bobcat Bungalow. We are a school with a lot of needs. Both mentally and emotionally. We are creating a sensory-filled alternative recess space for students who typically get overstimulated at recess and need a space to do puzzles, projects, and tasks that work their minds.

It allows them to have a calm space to use coping skills.

We want mood lighting so the vibes are calm, bean bags for flexible seating, and tons of building toys and art. The students will be able to use the bean bags when they need sensory pressure to self-regulate. The staff will support social groups. Students at our school don't have a lot of access to games or social events outside of school. We will use the building blocks and magnets to build cities and describe how their bodies feel when they move through spaces that are busy or too loud. We want them to feel like they have a space to have fun where they don't miss going to recess outside. Students will make beaded friendship bracelets and have community chats where they can make connections with each other.

Our goal for this space is to make sure that students who either don't feel welcomed by friends on the playground, students who struggle with impulsive choices, and students who get overstimulated have a place to go. This allows their teachers to fully use their breaks and have their own time, instead of letting students stay back from recess.
