Who are my kids? I work on the North Slope of Alaska. I teach about 50 6th and 7th grade students ELA and SS. 100% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Why are they special?
My students are native Inupiaq kids in rural northern Alaska.
That's right! It's a fly-in village of about 700 people. No roads out of town, only planes! It's a poor community in wealth, but rich in community and culture.
My students work hard and play hard! They want you to know that they LOVE sports and sledding.....not to mention whaling, hunting, and fishing!
My Project
In this harsh wintery climate of northern Alaska, my students are accustomed to physically working and playing hard. In a subsistence society, there is always a reward at the end of a task. In a classroom, that reward not always so visually evident.
Having these board games will make a difference in motivation for my students who work so hard during the week.
That's why this project is so important to me and my students.
Students grow socially AND academically when they are free to express themselves while learning and interacting with peers. One student exclaimed "We're having fun, Ms. H!!" on our first day of playing games. They are truly enthusiastic about playing word and strategy games! Thank you for your consideration in helping us to update our class board games.
