Help me give my students BOARD GAMES!! Help with social skills, learning boundaries, focus, working together, make connections, and most importantly keep them actively engaged and making connections!
Hello! Thank you for taking a little time to learn about US! We live in Wrangell (population 2,500), a small island in Southeast Alaska (picture is of the Stikine River Flats)! We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful, majestic and friendly place. I am the 3rd grade teacher to 18 incredible and inspiring kids. The majority of my students are Alaska Native and get Tlingit Language class once a week! Over 50% of our students are at the poverty level as well.
I was born and raised in Wrangell, therefore it is a dream to be living and working in my hometown.
This opportunity provides me endless opportunities to give back to my community. I am hoping to achieve a classroom environment in which my students are passionate about learning, enjoy challenges, and feel safe to explore. Students learn in many different ways, therefore, I need to create an atmosphere that will guide them to their full potential.
My Project
Research shows the benefits of games used as a learning and education tool. I love this idea!! Let's turn devices off and interact with one another! We will use these games in a whole group and small group setting.
The benefits of board games in the classroom are monumental!
They promote brain growth, memory formation and cognitiveand problem solving skills. Board Games will help with social skills (i.e. communicating, verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying interaction with others). My students will learn boundaries, sharing, taking turns, and following directions. Games help with focus as games can lengthen attention span and encourage focus. Lastly, games provide a context for engaging practice and students will develop a variety of connections with the content and one another.
