My students are 7th graders in North Carolina. We have a completely diverse population and range from extremely high ability levels to extremely low ability levels. A lot of my students come from single-parent families, and therefore they might not always get the support that they need at home.
My students come in every day, eager for fun activities to help them remain engaged in the learning process.
My Project
Our school rewards kids every month that show PRIDE, our school Positive Behavior Reinforcement model. Students should not have to pay for these experiences or bring their own games to play during this time. Sometimes, when we have to absorb a class due to a teacher on the team being out, we reward them at the end of the day for their positive behavior throughout the day. I do not have any games for them to play during these times and am requesting a variety of games including Monopoly, Clue, Trouble, Yahtzee, and Connect 4.
It would be so easy to put them on their phones and let them go, however, students need to work on their communication skills and have meaningful conversations with their classmates while they play a game.
I would like to have a variety of games on hand for when kids earn class reward time as well. Students should not have to bring these items in for a reward for themselves. Most days that I would like to use them, there isn't enough notice to ask students to bring something in.
The ThinkFun Gravity Maze Marble Run Logic and Electric Circuit games and will be a reward during those units. I would like to test them out and see if it would be something that I would like to get more sets of in order to spend a day having kids practice the concept of gravity and circuits in a fun way.
