Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher in a large, Pre-K-8 school and I work the after-school program in our school. Most, if not all, of our students come from lower income families. Many of these children face poverty, violence, and obscenities of life on a daily basis; that are well beyond what most of us could imagine.
Despite all of that, they would come to school hungry for knowledge trying to do their best to learn as I try to do my best to give them a good education and an introduction to the American way of life.
With limited resources, there are many things that others consider basic parts of education that I am unable to provide without the assistance of others. Many of my students do not come to school fed, let alone with the correct school supplies needed to succeed. In this time of quarantine when I cannot check on them; only a handful of them are coming online or calling to check in so it worries me that they are not getting the academic or nutritional nourishment that they need to stimulate their minds and keep their bodies healthy.
My Project
I want to bring families together with board games to combat boredom and keep kids learning during this distance learning time. They love Uno and playing cards! When we are in school we have a connect four war on the last Friday of the month. My students love board games and some have never seen them before coming to school.
We have these games at my house and in my classroom, but most of my students do not have the opportunity to play board games at home.
Board games have been wonderful for my children, and I would like to bring chess, checkers, Sorry and Battleship to our students for some distance learning fun! These games create opportunity for students to learn cooperatively. I have also seen many students come into my classroom and they have never played board games before. These are simple and fun. Please help me bring my students a little fun to combat the boredom of not getting out. They live in neighborhoods that are not safe so most of my students do not get outside, but at least a board game can bring a little relief.
