Board Games, Learning from an Unplugged Social Experience
My students need new board games for our growing after school club. Board games help students learn important social, analytical and reasoning skills in a fun environment
As the 2:30 bell rings and the school day ends, not all students head for the door. Students sign-in with the after-school program, and then many head for the library. It is at this point that my classroom, the library media center, morphs into the headquarters for our after school Board Game Club.
My after-school students are eager to play board games.
My students can be anyone from sixth grade to twelfth grade, but they all share one thing in common, they will jump at the chance to try out a new game. Furthermore, my students are eager to share what they know about the games and often encourage their friends to join.
What started last winter as a once a week after-school club with a handful of students and a few games, grew. By the end of the school year, the group was meeting twice a week and we had enough students to run multiple games simultaneously. I hope to build on this growth this year and see our club continue to expand. Board Games are fun, but they also provide students with an opportunity to learn important social, analytical, and problem solving skills in an environment that they will remember. To keep growing and building on these skills though, our club needs more games.
My Project
The Board Game Club gives students the opportunity to connect with their peers and teachers in a different type of learning environment. In a society that is hooked on technology, the board game club offers an "un-plugged" experience for our students. These games help students develop important social and academic skills in a fun and safe environment. Through game play, students acquire relevant social, analytical and problem solving skills that are invaluable for life outside of school. Additionally, students have the opportunity to make connections with their peers and teachers beyond the regular classroom. Students are encouraged to play new games, new opponents, and to share what they know with new members.
Our Board Game club has a dedicated group of students who participate each week.
These games enrich student learning through the fun application of analytical and problem solving skills. The ability to add new games to our collection would allow us to continue to expand our club and to provide students with the opportunity to experience new challenges and learn new skills.
