Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of low income children from the Bay Area in California. These children have been completing English and math centers since August, but have not had the proper tools to do so. We have been learning a lot about division, multiplication, fractions, informational text and vocabulary in our centers and it would be wonderful to have games that will motivate my students to learn these concepts in centers. It saddens me that I cannot provide them with more center materials so they can work on being independent and doing their classwork effectively. My students are so enthusiastic regarding reading, math and their love for academics. They love completing centers with their team and are so excited to use their reasoning skills and and mathematical skills to improve themselves. Their love for learning inspires me everyday to provide the best quality education I can for them. They come together as a class to help one another and be the best that they can be.
My Project
Centers are a wonderful tool where students are put into groups with others of the same skills level and they review and learn new concepts about math, English and Social Studies. These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because it will integrate learning in a fun and engaging format during centers time. Having these new tools will be instrumental in getting my students to learn more effectively while having fun at the same time. By practicing all these skills in an engaging format, my students will be more likely to remember the topics we are covering in class, as well as a deeper conceptual understanding of how it applies across multiple subjects.
I will be using the reading comprehension games to improve my students’ comprehension skills and literacy.
I will also be using many grammar games to review the concepts we are learning that week. I plan to use these games during my center time with my students. I will use the math and the English games interchangeably throughout the rest of the year to promote my students’ higher order thinking skills.
My students will benefit from these centers games because these games will help them review for our SBAC standardized test as well as our Eureka Math curriculum. By putting this important information in a game format, students are motivated to learn and aren’t bored with reading and math. When students are motivated by fun and engaging materials they are more likely to learn and memorize the information being taught. It is very important for my students to learn these concepts and review others for the state test within a fun and engaging center activity.
