Our school is located in the mountains of south eastern Kentucky. The towns were once booming because of coal mining. Unfortunately, many mines have shut down, causing many hard working families to find alternate means of income and to struggle to get by. With this being said, many of my students' needs are not being met at home. They come to school hungry, in need of clothing and love. They are overwhelmed and anxious about what is to come.
Despite all of this, my students somehow find the strength to carry on.
They have taught me to never take anything for granted. I hug them a little tighter because you never know what they are going through. With help from special people, like you, we can make it just a little bit easier on my students. We can show them how much they are loved, and cared for. We can show them that there is hope, and good in the world.
My Project
Sometimes, children just need a break, especially my students with special needs that become frustrated easily. So, they enjoy playing board games and reading books so that they can take AR tests on the computer. This is their way of calming down and relaxing.
Many of my board games are missing essential pieces and my students often have to improvise to play the game correctly.
This makes it difficult for my students that have special needs that are very particular about these games.
My students will use the rug to sit on while they read and play their board games. They will absolutely love having a comfy place to lay while they play their games that have all of the pieces!
