This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a multi-age Montessori classroom in a large public school district. My students are vibrant 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders, who are full of energy and curiosity. Many come from homes with challenging financial situations, and some come from homes with challenging emotional situations. All of my students, however, come to school ready to learn. In addition to academic lessons, we work on improving focus, caring for others, and caring for ourselves. I love watching them develop confidence in their abilities and being a part of their academic and personal journey.
My Project
Every Friday, after straightening and cleaning our classroom, my students have time to play games. Game time is usually 45-60 minutes depending on how long it takes to clean the room, and it is something that all of my students look forward to.
My goal for game time is to allow the children to interact with their classmates in healthy, positive play activities that are UN-plugged!!
I thoroughly enjoy observing the children during game time and seeing a side of them that I do not usually see during the academic pursuits of our week. Positive social skills are bolstered as students learn to take turns, be supportive of one another, be part of a team, and be a gracious winner or loser. Students also learn to take great care of the games and their parts, right down to the boxes they come in!
One of the loveliest sights to see is when children who are not necessarily close friends interact with one another over an exciting game. I also enjoy seeing when students notice a lone student looking a bit lost, and they reach out to include the student in their activity or game.
This project includes a variety highly rated board games. Many are competitive, which provides students with the opportunity to have pre-game discussions about rules and outcomes for their games. Some of the games provide opportunities for long-term strategies and critical thinking, and a few of the games place a greater emphasis on creative thought. I am also including a few cooperative and 1-person games for students who prefer a challenge without rivalry.
