I started a 6th grade lunch group revolving around classic board games to help students work on necessary social skills. It is a safe space for students to engage with their peers in a fun environment. This group is especially successful on rainy days as it provides an indoor space for students.
Many of our students travel long distances to attend our school.
We are home to over 930 students that come to us from a variety of backgrounds. Our goal is create a safe environment to be fun, goofy, and ultimately to be themselves. Middle school is a time when life-long friendships can be created and our hope is to help create opportunities for positive interactions between students.
My Project
I was lucky to receive a small grant to purchase board games and playing cards for our lunch group half way through the year. It is quickly becoming a popular lunchtime, relationship-building program. We hope to expand our program to more days and expand into more rooms as we currently have to limit the number of students we can have in one room.
With the overuse of technology these days, it is pretty amazing to see our students unplug and engage with one another.
The room gets so loud and the energy in the room is so infectious that it has become my favorite place to be on campus. We hope to have the resources and materials in time to start our group at the beginning of next school year, as it is the most important time, socially, for our kids that come from outside of our surrounding neighborhoods and often don't know other students.
