This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 3 year olds are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They thrive while living in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. Some have gone through more in their young lives than many of us will every have to endure in a lifetime. Yet every day, they walk down a hill to school where they are able to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood and find solace in our classroom. Despite all of the challenges they face outside the school walls, they still come to school each day ready and excited to learn.
My students blossom with the educational and enrichment opportunities being offered, which helps them to build their background knowledge and exposes them to things they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.
For all of them, coming to school is where they have any opportunities to build their academic and social foundations to set them up for success later in life.
My Project
Our classroom library has not had new books in almost 5 years. We are down to a very select few titles and even those are in tattered and worn condition. My three year olds love books and love to be read to. They deserve new books to stock their library with and put their little hands on. This list of books includes classic favorites from Eric Carle as well as books that will teach them early math skills like counting and numbers.
These books will help them to become life long learners and readers.
They sturdiness of the board books will allow for these books to withstand a group of rambunctious three year olds and still teach them early reading skills like turning pages and orienting the book correctly.
