Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 3rd graders in a Social Communication Support classroom. The students in my classroom have sensory processing disorders and Autism. Students often struggle with processing different environmental factors in the classroom which impact student learning.
The primary focus in our classroom is communication.
The students in the classroom often communicate with each other utilizing pictures to express their wants or needs. In our classroom, we use a hands-on approach as we cook weekly, create art projects, utilize frequent movement breaks, and incorporate items that make every aspect of academics a hands-on experience such as bendable wax strips.
Each student in my classroom has an individualized educational plan in which provides them a unique educational experience. Students participate in breakfast and snack in our classroom. During these times we learn how to set a table, use manners, and further our focus of communication!
My Project
My students need musical instruments to incorporate into academics. Some of our students are very musically inclined (I believe musical prodigies of sorts) and need instruments to help internalize concepts such as personal information (their address, phone number, etc.).
Instruments like boomwhackers are easy for students to grasp which allows them to participate in a variety of musical tasks.
Some students have a true talent and passion for music and learn through music. Currently, students have classical or instrumental music playing through the computer all day. We did movement breaks in which we utilize the computer as well. However, my students need the ability to create their own music and learn to read music.
Can you imagine if Beethoven had never been given a piano? Can you imagine if Lindsey Stirling had never been given a violin? When given the opportunity to play musical instruments we are providing the students the opportunity to be like Beethoven or Lindsey Stirling one day!
