Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know what it is like to be assigned a book report and not be able to do the work? Many students are below grade level and cannot find appropriate books to read for their book reports.
My students are eager learners and many are below grade level in the area of reading.
This affects them with their comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. My school is a 100% free lunch school due to the socioeconomic status of its attendees. Students arrive as early as 6:00 am and leave as late as 5:30 pm.
Parents work long hours to provide what they can for their children. Most times this is not enough. They expect the school to take care of all of the needs of their children, not just their academic needs. Students may live with one parent or with their grandparents caring for them.
My Project
I have 27 fourth graders with varying reading abilities, ranging from Kinder/first, all the way up to 5th grade level. The better reader's can find many appropriate books, but my lower readers are stumped. There are very few appropriate books in my library. I have requested 1st grade King Series books and Teachers guide so they too can create! In addition, the computer that we have is a hot spot in my room, and I do not want to put a limit on the amount it is used. I would like to see my lower level readers frequent the computer too. These readers will allow such students the opportunity to create book reports. I have requested multiple copies so that initially they can create reports together and have the support of each other. My students are eager to learn and I am hoping that the proper materials will propel them forward. In addition, I have noticed that the King Series books have wonderful topics that support character education and typical childhood social issues.
This project is important so that all of my student's should have the opportunity to be at grade level.
Student's with difficulty accessing the books are more likely to shut down, misbehave, or "lose their place" when called on so that they avoid reading with the peers who are doing better than them. Being a poor reader impacts the whole child, not just their academics! It is critical that they reach grade level ASAP!
