My students are some of the brightest and hardworking kids you would ever meet. Many of them are forced to grow up at a young age because of their home environment.
Many of our students live in poverty and do not have access to opportunities to better their living situations.
I want to give them tools that can help them deal with these difficult living conditions. I know that music has helped me through some hard times and giving students a tool that can help them create music wherever they are or in any situation will help them cope in this challenging world.
Music has a way to help people get through hard times. Blues music was created in America by African slaves that needed music to cope with the living conditions they were forced to live in. Slaves created music by making instruments out of household items. Some instruments, like the harmonica, were used differently than their intended use to help create a sound that would complement the feelings of the blues. Having the power of music can help anyone cope with hard times.
My Project
Local musicians from this heavily impacted area will come to the school and teach the students about the blues and how music, especially the blues, has helped people cope and deal with difficult situations in their lives. Giving the students a healthy way to make their lives better is something that will last with them their entire life and impact our world for the better.
Students will be given tools that will allow them to use healthy ways to cope with difficult situations in their lives.
This will benefit them and their families and hopefully, inspire them to use these tools to make their life a better place.
Students will also be given a STEM challenge to create a musical instrument at home that they can share with their fellow students.
