My students are hardworking, eager, and determined to make progress for a better future. Many of my students are economically disadvantaged and English Language Learners, and they have not always experienced a feeling of success. Many of their parents are working multiple jobs just to make ends meet. The oil boom here has really hurt non-oil field families.
My students come to my class every day expecting me to teach them something new to lead them down their road to success as they prepare to be college or career ready.
They have dreams and expectations, and it is my priority to help them make them come true.
My room is full of literary challenges to help expose students to a variety of literary characters. Students enjoy books with characters like them. When they can identify with the book because of culture, experiences, or family dynamics, they are more likely to be invested and enjoy the book.
Bluebonnet books are Texas' state award for the best book for students in grades 3-6 voted on by the students that have read five or more.
It is often difficult for the students to get the books they are interested in from the library when we have 100 students per grade level in third through sixth grade, so having copies in the classroom library will remedy this situation.
Many of the books on this year's list are cultural. This will help my students from other cultures find books with characters like them and situations they can understand.
