Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have some of the best students even though they face many obstacles. Our campus is a Title I bilingual campus with over 80% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged. They deserve every opportunity to succeed and to be engaged in every part of their learning.
Student engagement is one of the many keys to us reaching our students and helping them fit into the ever-changing world they live in.
Our classrooms of today cannot continue to look like our classrooms of the past if we want our students to be problem solvers and use all the skills they need to be successful in the world they live in. Our spaces should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. We need to provide our students with choices so that they can be successful in their educational endeavors.
My Project
Our library participates in the TXLA Bluebonnet Reading Contest each year. We enthusiastically encourage students to read as many of the books as they can and join in to vote for their favorite. We have noticed that one of the barriers to participation is that we are not able to get the funding for books till long after the list has been announced therefore giving students less time to read the selected titles. We would like to increase our participation for our campus by purchasing this year's list early so they have more time to check them out!
