Blow it up!: Giving All Students Access to the Action
My students need a document camera in the classroom so I can project science/math demonstrations, ensuring everyone has equal access to information, tools and feedback.
Imagine you are one of 33 students eagerly trying to circle up to watch your teacher demonstrate how to use a protractor or mix solutions in an experiment. With so many bodies, my students are more focused on not getting poked or crowded than the lesson I'm trying to teach.
My students are fascinating rambunctious 10-12 year olds.
They're in the 5th and 6th grade in California and they're doing their best to keep on learning in increasingly challenging circumstances. Next year they will adjust to having 10 more students in each of their classes with less money in the schools for resources to help us all adjust to more crowded rooms.
My Project
We all remember the overhead projectors of our school days. These are a helpful, but extremely limited tool for projecting images to large groups. Your projections have to be light transparent and documents have to be copied onto transparency film. The document camera is an essential tool in a classroom with too many students to crowd around in a circle and watch. It will enable my students to see anything I'm doing projected onto a screen and follow along in real time. It will help my students stay focused on the questions and learnings at hand and enable me to instantly share student work with everyone or demonstrate how to use an important math or science tool.
I can't actually imagine being able to reach all my students without this tool.
Countless time and energy will be wasted moving desks and bodies and demonstrating multiple times. Students will really feel the impact of our class sizes increasing if they can't get access to all the information. Your help in funding this project will help in our classroom, not just in one activity, but all day, every day throughout the school year.
