My students need 25+ illustrated chapter books to read to support their growth as readers as I try to learn more about how to encourage all students in their reading.
A Chinese proverb says,"A book is like a garden carried in the pocket." As my students' reading abilities grow, their love of reading also grows. I want to encourage them to be avid readers as they read books about what they love.
My seventeen second graders attend a small primary school.
Our school is in a rural community and is over 60% free and reduced lunch. My students are very curious about the world and really enjoy reading. They especially love to read books about familiar characters and topics. My students often encourage each other in their reading as a classroom community.
My Project
I am requesting easy chapter books from three popular series. These are Mercy Watson, Ivy and Bean, and Mr. Putter and Tabby. These books have been introduced to the students and they are very interested in reading them individually. I am also requesting three science books to quench my students' curiosity about the world. I have asked for two professional books that have been recommended by other teachers that will allow me to learn more about how to encourage my students in their reading.
A donation towards this project will mean so much to my students.
They love to read and would be so excited to have new chapter books to read that are not quite so hard. As our classroom library grows, my second graders will bloom into better readers.
