Our students are Middle and High School students who have struggled academically, socially, and emotionally in traditional comprehensive settings. Many of the students that attend our school live in the small pockets of poverty in San Francisco. Many of the behaviors that are important for survival in their neighborhoods of origin and inside their homes are often not celebrated in traditional learning environments. The students in our care are often most responsive to educational activities that have social and creative components.
This block printing project will make a difference to my students' learning because it will help students follow clear instructions and procedures. The students will also learn to endure the process of creating multiple iterations before creating a final draft of an idea. As a byproduct of the process, the students will also think critically about the creating their own brands and identities. The students at school frequent rely on external processes for self esteem: new shoes, clothes, and/or hair styles. Exposure to a new skill and mastery of that process can build esteem that is less reliant on consumption.
