I teach in an SEI classroom in East Boston. All of my students are English Language Learners with an ELD level 1-3. In order for my students to become fluent English speakers and readers, they need to have a strong foundation in phonics skills.
In order to help my students become successful learners, they could use magnetic letters and magnetic boards to practice building words.
If my students had magnetic letters and boards they could work with a partner or individually at their own pace.
My Project
The Magna Tiles will help my students in many ways. For example, they will learn how to problem solve either by following a plan for building or using their imagination. They will also help with creativity because the tiles can be moved freely and combined in countless ways.
Academically, tiles offer opportunities to test hypotheses and build scientific reasoning.
Students can also practice measurement, comparison, estimation and symmetry.
Finally, they can follow their own plan, or share a friend's vision and work together to create something which will give them a feeling of success. These are some examples of the learning possibilities that block play supports.
