Emma Thompson said, "being disabled should not mean being disqualified from having access to every aspect of life." Daily, this is what I strive to do, give my students with disabilities access to every aspect of life. They are the world to me, and they deserve to live in a world they can take on!
My students are warm, loving children who come to school with a huge smile on their face daily.
They are eager to learn, and love their peers and teachers. My students have a wide range of disabilities, which makes it difficult for them to participate in the classroom like their peers. My students are in kindergarten and a lot of the learning is done on the rug! My students have a difficult time keeping their bodies in control and respecting personal space. Also, physical disabilities hinder their ability to sit up by themselves. They attend a school with a diverse population, however the moment they walk through the school doors, they belong to the same, nurturing, loving school community.
My Project
Since my students have a difficult time keeping their bodies in control, engaging in "rug-time" activities, and unable to sit up by themselves, cube chairs would give them access to this aspect of learning in the classroom. The cube chairs being requested would allow the students to have their own personal space, sit up and pay attention to the teacher, engage and interact with their peers, and be focused on their learning. Instead of rolling around or worrying if a friend is touching them, they will be able to sing along to a class song, or raise their hand to answer a question. Their learning will be positively impacted by something as small as a chair.
Every child is different, and every student learns differently.
My students have difficulty attending, physical handicaps, and body control problems. Something as small as a chair is able to give these students access to their learning environment and participate in the classroom. In kindergarten, an essential goal is classroom communication, and through a cube chair, I strongly believe my students will be able to interact and engage with their peers and their learning.
