Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In a school that has had almost ten years of high teacher turnover, the children are the one constant for the teachers who return. In spite of the hardships many of our students are dealing with at home, or the learning challenges they face, or the worries they carry in their hearts, they truly have a wonderful, joyful spirit in middle school. They want you to know them as individuals, and not as a collective. They want to know you as the individual who happens to be their teacher. They want to learn and experience and understand how the world connects. They want to believe that the adults don't leave when it gets tough.
How can you imagine the what the world might be if you don't know the numerous possibilities that exist for you?
We need to be able to offer them so much more while we have them with us, since we have them for such a short period of time. They need to see that we are bringing as many opportunities and possibilities to them because we do believe in their abilities and intelligence.
My Project
As a former Kindergarten teacher, I know from experience how block building challenges young children to grow in a variety of ways. From creativity to problem solving to socialization, a rich and integrated block curriculum becomes a vital part of a classroom.
The school library is a different and special kind of classroom.
While I cannot create a block corner as I once did for my young students, I can create a high-interest block curriculum with smaller blocks for my older students.
