My students are some of the raddest, most creative, exceptional, and brilliant humans in the universe. They have faced innumerable challenges fearlessly and graciously and make me proud to be a Chicago teacher every day.
Activism in literature is fundamental to my students' love of books.
They are incredible writers who voraciously read narratives that echo their own experiences, helping them further develop their ideologies.
My seniors are excited to go to college next year as the second ever graduating class of my school and they want to leave an impactful legacy for future classes. Reading and writing by bearing witness to one's own testimony is an important part of that legacy, and I want to help my students further develop their voices over the next few months.
My Project
"From one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement comes a powerful poetic memoir and reflection on humanity. Patrisse Khan-Cullors's story asks us to remember that protest in the interest of the most vulnerable comes from love. Leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement have been called terrorists, a threat to America. But in truth, they are loving women whose life experiences have led them to seek justice for those victimized by the powerful."
Help me provide each one of my 60 students with their own personal copy of this impactful work.
We will be reading, analyzing and writing about this book in class. This will provide my students with valuable practice of deconstructing complex texts for college next year. My students are young activists inspired to dismantle the white supremacist heteropatriarchy.
