My students range from 9th through 12th grade, and many of them have special needs, from learning disabilities to behavior disorders to limited English proficiency. A large percentage of our students come from low-income households, and most of them work hard for everything that they have.
Despite their difficulties, these dedicated students strive to help each other.
The ESOL students have created a clothes closet and the student council has organized school supply drives for our school and neighboring schools. They have pulled together to raise money for fellow students with serious illnesses and students who have had personal tragedies. They inspire me with their sense of community.
My Project
I work in a classroom that has two big, beautiful windows that let an amazing amount of natural sunlight into our classroom. We are grateful for them, because they allow us to come into the room in the morning without the need to turn on the headache-inducing florescent lights.
The natural light is a great benefit in the morning, but the afternoon sunlight poses some problems.
The sun streams directly through the window, so anyone standing in the front of the room is blinded, and anyone looking at the white board or the Promethean Board in the front has to deal with a large glare. Also, this makes our classroom uncomfortably warm in the afternoons.
Getting blackout curtains in the classroom will solve all three of these problems. Students giving presentations after lunch can do so without being blinded, students will be able to read the material that is presented to them without moving around the room, and the temperature of the room won't rise because of the afternoon sun. This will make it easier for the students to concentrate in class, producing better results.
