My Students

I teach at an IB (International Baccalaureate) Title I school. The philosophy of our school is to create conscientious, global citizens. We use project-based and inquiry-driven learning. It's an amazing school with incredibly diverse students. We go beyond teaching the standards and focus on teaching the whole child.

I believe in challenging each student to maximize their potential.

My students are diverse, driven, and unique. Gifted, IEPs, dreamers, doers; I believe that we are all more than a label, and I strive to create an environment where all students have a voice.

My Project

My students need access to amazing books and the opportunity to participate in thought-provoking conversations. I've begun using literature circles (think awesome book club discussions) in my literacy block and it has transformed the way my students view reading. To become great story-tellers they need the chance to read great stories. I had my students create a list of special request books they are interested in reading like Fish in a Tree, The One and Only Ivan, and Phantom Tollbooth. I need more books that are above and below fifth-grade level so no students get left out. Now it's time to take our discussions to the next level.

It's time to use our class blog to tell amazing stories!

Our class has a blog and each student has their own page where they get to tell their own stories. They love commenting on each other's blog. It's an amazing way to blend their love of social media with our big goals of becoming fluent readers and talented authors. We need Chromebooks so they have more access to their blog so they can have creative posts about what they've read as well as creating their own stories. My students will continue their lit circle conversations in their own blog. They can begin creating their own stories that use the similar themes and then eventually branch out in their own direction.

Why the extras like noise machines and different seating? I believe students should have control over their learning environment. Some of my students love listening to white noise using headphones while they work and others need a little wiggle. I think the important part is what students learn, and anything I can do to help them accomplish that is great with me!
