This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 9th grader English students are so dependent on technology, they have become lost when it comes to reading literature classics. They can't transfer the skills taught unless they can choose their own book. By blending old with new, the goal of "transfer" is within their grasp.
Students own their learning.
Teaching transfer, of essential reading skills, will prepare students for the demands of reading in college and in future careers.
Using the classics provides cultural capital for the modern world.
My Project
Using classics of English, like Mice and Men, to provide the authority on skills allows the student to apply and practice with a modern text they find interesting. By blending current titles, like The Skin I'm In, students are not stuck trying to decipher books written in previous centuries. In addition to learning a skill, they can develop empathy for individuals that are different.
Using direct instruction from the teacher, the students have concrete examples of how the skill can be applied to a text they WANT to read.
By providing a choice of books, that are readily available in the classroom, even reluctant readers will engage in the study of classics.
