First graders are eager little learners! They have endless energy, a million questions and want to learn it all! They come into first grade with various reading, writing and math skills. My biggest challenge is meeting 22 student's individual needs.
Our school has two blended learning programs available to us - these programs include online, self-paced math and reading instruction.
I started using DreamBox, our math program, in my classroom last year. My students were so engaged and successful. They each worked at their own pace which means they were not held back when they were ready to move on. It also means that students who needed additional support and varied instruction had extra time on a key concept or skill. It was a true Win-Win!!
My Project
I currently have several 1st generation iPads that are no longer compatible with many new apps and educational programs. Having these new iPads would allow me to continue to integrate blended learning in language arts and math. These additional devices will be used during our math and language arts rotations. DreamBox (our math program) and iStation (our language arts program) provide weekly reports of student progress. I am able to use this data to assign specific assignments to specific students, progress monitor, and communicate with parents. This information also guides my small group instruction which is directly tailored to their individual needs.
