My fourth grade students are amazing! I currently teach in a departmentalized school environment where my focus is on math. My students are in a fast paced environment where there is no time to waste since they need to transition from subject to subject and classroom to classroom quickly.
The students at my school come from various economic and cultural backgrounds.
Our school serves students in grades K-5 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. As a result, we are consistently one of the top-performing schools in the county every year. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in middle school and beyond.
My Project
I am working on changing my classroom into a student-centered blended learning environment. In a blended learning environment the students are given the opportunity to control the time, place, pace, and/or path of their learning. One way this is done is by allowing students to access the daily lessons through digital content on these classroom computers. After completion of the digital lessons, students are required to demonstrate an understanding of the content through various assessment methods that are embedded into the lessons.
By using the data that is captured online, I am able to provide more individualized support to students based upon their needs.
This would be done by placing students into flexible math groups based upon the results of their digital assessments. Those who were struggling on a topic would be provided with small group, face-to-face intervention. Those demonstrating an understanding would be pushed by being provided with extension lessons. Flexibility is key for both myself and the students in blended learning since the groups could change daily based upon reports I receive from the program being used and other observations.
