This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are always excited when we begin our unit on planetary sciences. We have textbooks and other media resources that students may use, but sometimes it is too technical for students to make connections with the content. A historical fiction graphic novel will help my students better understand how we first began exploring space in an engaging way. Students will be able to make connections with the book we read and the facts and theories they learn from the text book. My plan is to read the book out loud and have the students follow along with their copy.

Students reading historical science is something new for them and will help them make better connections to content and lead to deeper discussions in their groups.

Science is often hands on and project based learning. However, science literacy is also important, especially as my students are about to embark on high school. If I can get my students excited to read about science with a graphic novel it will only help them want to read and learn more from our other resources in class.
