I teach in the West Side of San Antonio, TX where most of my students come from all different kinds of backgrounds and communities. One of the biggest characteristics I have seen in my students is their strong desire to attend college but high discouragement because expenses are far greater than what they can afford. It is through their childhood experiences and what I have seen them display in the classroom, that I believe they have the potential to change the trajectory of their future and what others say they can do. Expectations are low for these students and not many believe they are capable of attending college, including their parents. All my students have known is that they would grow up to be just like what they grew up around which was gang violence, drugs and abuse. However, their curious minds, creative spirits and strong personalities say otherwise.
They are fearless and I know they are equipped to overcome any obstacles and challenges they face, because of their strong backgrounds.
They are relentless in the college going process and I believe my students will pursue something greater than the label their communities have placed on them.
These materials will be extremely beneficial for students in their college classes. A planner will assist the students to keep track of upcoming assignments, exams, events, etc. The pencils, pens and highlighters will assist the students in taking notes and highlight key terms and/or information in required textbook readings. The laptop will be raffled off to a senior and this will help that student complete his/her assignments outside of the classroom and will be used to type any essays.
My students have limited resources to afford this on their own, therefore I want to be able to help them in this small way to get them a head start.
These were just some of the things I needed while I was in college and they were extremely beneficial to me. I want to be sure they have the supplies to help them be organized and successful in college.
