My students and I are apart of a Title I school in a rural, low-income area of Southwest Virginia. I an a Student Intervention Specialist and service students through Response to Intervention in various grades throughout the day in reading and math. My students come with many varying abilities and disabilities, including physical and cognitive. They come from very diverse households, which include everything from traditional families to foster families, to those that are struggling with homelessness.
Through the circumstances they face, they each come in with smiles on their faces and a love for learning.
They are creative, thoughtful, and full of wonder! Each day is a new day for them to learn and grow within my classroom. Each student has their own personality towards learning which makes teaching them such a joy. Though they may struggle academically, their spirits towards learning never falter!
My Project
All the students I service with reading interventions have difficulty with basic reading and spelling skills. Having the extra literacy supports such as Explode the Code gives my students the ability to learn these phonetic skills. These books will provide concrete, systematic, and direct learning of basic phonic skills. Students will be able to practice these phonetic skills daily, and they will provide more opportunities to support their reading goals. My students will gain a sense of pride when they become more confident, fluent readers. I will use this program in conjunction with current multi-sensory teaching methods, including the Orton-Gillingham approach.
