Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Histroical Fiction is a window into the past. Students love to learn about different time periods through exciting characters. Historical Fiction gives students the chance to learn about different time periods, while also engaging in compelling character and literary work.
My students go to a high needs, Title One, community school in Oklahoma.
The students we see every day overcome many obstacles in order to make learning a priority in their lives each and every day. Our school does the best we can to make sure that all of our students' every day needs are met, including food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and school supplies.
My Project
My students need 35 engaging historical fiction texts that help them to identify with different time periods. My students will use these texts in a variety of ways. In addition, students will use these texts in order to learn more about different time periods while working in book clubs with other students to develop character and time period profiles based on several different texts from the same period. The students will engage in whole class study into a particular time period and compare that to the time period work they are doing in their book clubs. I will use them to read aloud to my students and to use them as mentor texts when reading and writing in the historical fiction genre.
Right now, my students do not have access to a wide variety of engaging historical fiction text that is on a level they can read and comprehend.
It is my goal to ensure that every student has access to an historical fiction genre text that is on a level they can read. These materials would provide a resource we currently do not have in adequate supply.
