Help me give my students two sets of the educational board game Black Wall Street.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are hard-working scholars who have opted to take my Syracuse University Project Advance Personal Finance course. These students in our college-preparatory public high school located in Harlem plan to attend and graduate from college (most of them as the first generation in their family to do so) and pursue a career in medicine, engineering, business, psychology, criminology, social work, teaching, and more.
These students have big plans for their own lives and refuse to let their zip code dictate the trajectory of their lives.
They realize that education is their key to a better life, and they are willing to prioritize their education. Although in most cases, my students' family situations are currently challenging and they are living well below the poverty level. They realize that a solid education is a key to financial independence and career success.
With this project, I seek to obtain two sets of the culturally relevant board game Black Wall Street for my scholars. Since virtually all of my students are African American, this board game is the perfect mix of history and personal finance education all rolled into one fun activity.
The story of Black Wall Street is not given enough focus in our American History classes; with this project, I hope to fill that gap while continuing with the Personal Finance curriculum of this course.
This course is about helping students to become financially independent and stable. I believe that understanding the business proficiency of their ancestors will help my students to develop the confidence to become successful in their own personal finances.
