My Students

The students who will participate in the project are in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. They come from a school in which 99% of the population receives a free or reduced-price lunch and often do not have opportunities lots of other kids are able to experience daily. We, as their educators, strive each day to make experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.

My students are talented and enthusiastic about art.

They love learning about artists and making their own unique art pieces. Many of them do not have the opportunity to make or experience art outside of the classroom. I believe that is one of the reasons they are so passionate about the art they create while they are in my classroom. "I can't wait to take this home!" are words I love to hear each day as my students create something they didn't think they could.

My Project

After students have actively participated in an engaging lesson about the history of the Civil Rights Movement in America they will show what they have learned by creating a class quilt. They will highlight key figures like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges. They will also learn about the history of quiltmaking in African American culture like the community members of Gee's Bend.

Each quilt square will highlight specific details, rights, or individuals that they have found to be the most important aspect of the Civil Rights Movement.

This will allow students to show their free-thinking and individuality as well as artistic expression so that they get the most comprehension about that time in US history. Using art to help students with understanding is key in the learning process of growing great minds.
