We need more books with Black female authors and protagonists that empower and affirm our young women through student led book circles!

Sajdah hated reading during advisory. She would sneak using her phone during reading time or reluctantly read...until I gave her "The Book of the Night Women," which featured a mulatto girl with green eyes just like Sajdah.
Milan was another student, who though loved learning, could not sit still--always distracted by gossip with friends-- until she read "An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones.
Milan and Tatianna were girls who excelled, above grade level in reading, but they enjoyed reading more when they related to the protagonists and had books to talk about with peers.
Mia, Milan, Sajdah, and Tatianna were all girls whose inspired me and help me come up with the idea to have a BLACK GIRLS READ Book Club.
Reading is the number one indicator of success in college. However, it is hard to practice that skills for many students who either feel unconfident or bored by the practice.
With your help, we can create a more diverse library, which will be used to build both motivation to read and community among ladies reading the same book.
We want to create a book club call BCBG (BlackGirlsBookClub) or BLACK GIRLS READ. Last year Ms. Clarke shared books with us that she read, but we need enough to be able to read together so that we can discuss topics like relationships, high school, and self-esteem as Black girls.
We want to create a book club that will be run by ourselves as seniors. We will be reading books then leading circles in pairs for the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. We hope that the younger girls can learn from us. The book club will help us practice our public speaking and mentorship skills.
We are high schoolers preparing for college. Our reading level is important and affects how well we do. Also, when we get to college we will be on campuses and in classes where most of the class does not look like us. We want to encourage and support each other with these stories or books before we go out into the real world.
