Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our boys in group are bright, hilarious, dedicated and serious about reading. This group of boys sets aside extra time each week to participate in a book club when other students are participating in extra recess or other fun activities. They are truly amazing and an inspiration for all black boys.

We are broadening our students’ empathy, respect, responsibility, and acceptance of others within a diverse population while providing a challenging and appropriate education.

Help me give my students a space to be themselves and learn about race, equity and literacy.

My Project

Black Boys Reads is a group of 4th and 5th grade boys who meets weekly to discuss their school community, home and books that they are reading together. The club allows for a safe space to talk about what it is like to be a black boy in Seattle Public schools and in the world through the lens of books and the characters within them. These boys leave this group with a better sense of self and curiosity about the black male experience. They improve their reading skills as well as foster positive relationships with their teachers, and the African American makes who help facilitate the book club meetings.

During this time of distance learning, the materials I am asking for will allow me to continue to keep this incredibly important group of boys engaged with their community and their learning.

Each boy will receive a personalized tote bag with their book club reading materials, a notebook, pencils and water bottle.
