My Students

Our World Cultures and Geography classes are a mix of abilities, ethnicities, and personalities, but all the students are amazing! Our classroom includes students who speak more than one language, students with dyslexia, Gifted and Talented students, and students in Special Education. We try to have some fun with our subject matter, with hands-on learning, Skype in the classroom, songs, art projects, and more!

Our school is the largest in the state with around 1,800 students in grades 6-8.

Over 80% of our students receive free lunch. Due to the demographics of our class, many of our students don't enjoy reading or aren't skilled at it.

Despite any imperfections in their lives, we work! The students typically give great effort daily and work hard with a challenging subject matter.

My Project

Our classes are roughly one third to one half African American students. We have very few African American teachers and other professionals. Although they are an important part of our classes and our campus, they are seriously under-represented in our staff and in our classroom's books.

"My dark skin is ugly," one of my African American students said to me when I questioned why she colored her matryoshka doll far lighter than her actual skin tone.

Obviously that is not okay.

While teaching students that their backgrounds and appearances are special, unique and wonderful can't be accomplished overnight, having more representative books should help.
