Help me give my students the chance to select a special birthday book that promotes science, diversity, and/or literacy in which they see themselves and can begin building their home library.
I am blessed to teach second grade at a wonderful Title I school in northeast North Carolina. Our students are loving, hard-working, easily motivated, and care about each other and their success! They thrive on competitions and reaching goals set for them throughout the school year.
Our students get excited, work harder, and stay more engaged when they are given options and choices which makes them feel valued and that their interests matter!
We are a diverse school consisting of students and families from various backgrounds and cultures as well as Coast Guard families. They are each unique and have a special way of winning our hearts with their kindness and thoughtfulness. The students and staff at our elementary school have truly become a family to one another!
My Project
This year, our school is placing a greater focus on self-selected reading during the school day and also during take home reading within the homes in hopes of increasing excitement and reading proficiency K-5. One way we hope to increase excitement for reading is by providing each student with a $5 Scholastic Birthday book coupon on their birthday for them to choose a special book in which they’re interested!
Scholastic Book Clubs offers a selection of books that include a variety of fiction, non-fiction, STEM texts expanding among all topics for all genders & will allow all students to choose a book they connect with & see themselves in on their special day to read & keep at home forever.
This birthday book project was such a success last school year and with your help, will continue to be an ongoing showing of love for reading among our school family. Our students love to read to each other, the teacher, their siblings & families. The best thing about this $5 birthday book coupon project is that students will be able to select the right book they can see themself in & connect with! They will also have the option to select a book from a variety of science topics that connect with STEM & STEAM at all reading levels.
