My students live in a small rural town where opportunities to develop background knowledge and new experiences outside of our area is limited. They are intellectually gifted students who are taught through project based learning. These students come from different socio-economic backgrounds and do not all have the same opportunities. My goal is to provide them with opportunities to use logical and creative problem solving skill in a real-life situation. These students have leadership skills that if developed can make a positive difference in our school and community.
My Project
This project will allow my students to continue developing there understanding of the "Farm to Table" concept that was started this year with our gardening unit. My students will experience firsthand how to incubate, hatch, and care for chickens. Using research, critical thinking, analysis and problem solving the students will develop the skills needed to raise chickens and provide their care on a daily basis. They will assist in using the dog houses and fencing materials to construct the houses for the chickens. Throughout this study they will learn responsibility and be allowed to share with others what they have learned through this process.
