Our bright students come from blue collar families and live right outside the city limits of Pittsburgh. Our students primarily come from economically disadvantaged homes and many receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Despite this, our students rise to the challenge in the classroom and in the community through volunteer efforts, participation in school activities and as mentors for each other. Our community suffered a devastating flood in 2004 which forced the district to temporarily shut down. Instead of enjoying the time off school, our students rolled up their sleeves to clean out homes and businesses around town and to deliver food and water to those in need. This is the way we do things at our school. Our motto is "Community, Character and Excellence" and our students live up to this everyday.
My Project
Our students have chosen to become globally responsible citizens. To support their efforts, teachers have focused classroom activities on the cornerstones of Research, Conservation & Education. Our students grow food in our greenhouse for the community gardens, they raise and release brook trout into local waterways and now they would like to make our school campus a welcoming and safe place for birds and bats to make their homes.
"The human-dominated landscape no longer supports functioning ecosystems or provides healthy places for birds." Audubon.org
Help support our students as they transform our school campus into a place where birds flourish and bats can nest safely.
Bats are important to our health as they assist in controlling the mosquito population. One bat can eat as many as 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour. This helps reduce the spread of vector-borne illnesses. The wooden bat houses will allow space for bats to safely establish a colony and will protect them from making a home in a less desirable location.
With the addition of the Woodlink, Nature's Way and Flying Spoon bird houses, our students can observe, track and record the different varieties of birds who are invited to nest in our boxes. Students can then share their findings on global databases such as eBird.org which encourages communities to get involved in conservation efforts by providing critical data on bird migration and habitat.
The Perky Pet bird feeders and Wagner's bird seed will allow us another opportunity to observe the birds that call our school campus home.
